Engaging Collaborative Art and Activism as Scholarship for Gender and Sexual

Justice

and the Hub for Decolonial Feminist Psychologies in Africa, University of

Cape Town

This event celebrating art, activism and scholarship towards gender and sexual justice brings

together artists, activists and scholars who will provide a multi-disciplinary intervention

including a film screening of Nthabiseng Mokoena and Gabrielle le Roux’s award-winning

film Reclaiming Intersex while Black, Genderqueer and Feminist in South Africa and the 10

year anniversary of the art exhibition Proudly African and Transgender exhibition, portrait

drawings of ten trans activists from East and Southern Africa drawn from life by Gabrielle Le

Roux and written onto by the participating activists. Directed towards opening up spaces for

black trans and intersex feminist and queer activists to be available and appreciated as

teachers, scholars and experts on the issues they represent, a range of Southern African

activists, artists and scholars will participate, including Wandile Dlamini, Madame Jholerina,

Peace Kiguwa, He Jin Kim, Gabrielle le Roux, Flavina Naze, Landa Mabege, Haile Matutu,

Liberty Matthyse, Nthabiseng Mokoena, Babalwa Mtshawu, Lerato Sello and international

queer scholar Jack Halberstam.

8 August: UWC School of Public Health

10.00– 12.15 Reflections on the project of decolonial, feminist, queer scholarly

engagements with art and activism
